Acerola is a fruit of 1 to 2 cm in diameter and grows on a small tree of the Malpighiaceae family native to South America. The acerola is an edible berry, whose flesh is juicy, yellow-orange, with a tangy taste, pleasant and very rich in vitamin C (up to 30 times what is found in the orange). It is suitable for people who need to boost their vitamin C intake. Vitamin C is a liposoluble vitamin in water that is involved in many physiological mechanisms as normal functioning of the immune system and protecting cells against oxidative stress. However, the body does not know how to synthesize it. So, this vitamin must therefore be provided daily by the diet by consuming for example citrus fruits, red fruits, or cabbages which are naturally rich in vitamin C or by a daily supplement.
